ABOUT ME
My name is John MacRae, and I am running to be the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board Trustee for Zone 1, representing West Carleton-March, Stittsville, and Rideau-Jock.
I grew up in a rural community that, like many communities in Zone 1, has experienced significant growth and change over the years. I understand what it means to live in a community where many lived experiences come together, and where families want to see their communities grow while preserving the sense of community that makes them special.
Zone 1 is one of my homes and one of the communities I care deeply about. I have spent a significant part of my life here over the past 8 years, and have strong connections to the people and communities throughout West Carleton-March, Stittsville and Rideau-Jock. I am proud to be running to represent a community that I know and call one of my many homes. My connection to public education is also personal. My sister has special needs, and I have seen firsthand how important it is for students to have the support they need to succeed, regardless of their abilities, circumstances, or background. Every student deserves to feel accepted, respected, and like they belong in their school and their community.
My professional experience has also given me the opportunity to work directly with children, families, and people with diverse needs. With the City of Ottawa, I worked in after-school children's programs and I supervised recreation programs for adults with special needs. These experiences reinforced for me how important accessible, supportive, and welcoming programs are to individuals, families, and communities.
I have also spent more than 10 years working in public service, with experience in program delivery, policy and regulatory interpretation, stakeholder relations, process improvement, and team leadership. My work has required me to listen to people, understand complex policies, resolve problems, communicate clearly, and work with stakeholders both inside and outside government.
I have also been involved in community and political advocacy, including advocating for workers and working with community organizations and other groups to bring their concerns forward. These experiences have taught me that good representation starts with listening. A trustee should listen to students, parents, educators, support staff and community members and make sure their voices are heard.
